ABOUT US

Haliburton Forest Biochar manufactures high quality biochar from sustainable forest products in central Ontario. We are an integrated company with operations extending from the forest to the finished product.

RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY

Haliburton Forest Biochar started as a research and development project focused on adding value to biomass harvested from sustainable forest management operations and produced by hardwood sawmills in central Ontario. Over the course of many years and extensive experimentation, we have developed proprietary technologies for producing and refining biochar from sustainably harvested biomass.

RAW MATERIALS

Haliburton Forest Biochar procures its raw materials in the form of biomass from the hardwood sawmills owned by Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd., which in turn source all of their sawlogs and related materials from sustainably managed forests.

PARTNERSHIP

Haliburton Forest Biochar is operated by Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd., a sustainable, multi-use private land stewardship company that owns and manages more than 250,000 acres of timberland in Ontario. The properties owned by Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd. were the first in Canada to be certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council – and we continue to manage our forests sustainably to this day.

SUSTAINABILITY

Haliburton Forest Biochar utilizes the biomass sustainably generated by our own properties and our own sawmills to produce high quality biochar. There are two markets served by Haliburton Forest Biochar: advanced manufacturing and improved soils. We produce customized biochar products for a wide variety of customers in each of those markets. Accordingly, Haliburton Forest Biochar is one of the only producers of biochar in the world that is integrated from the forest to the finished product.

INDIGENOUS RELATIONS

Haliburton Forest Biochar and Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd. both strive to do better in terms of sustainable forest management. One of our initiatives is improving our relationships with Indigenous communities, businesses, and individuals. We have enrolled in the Progressive Aboriginal Relations program, which is administered by the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business.

We respectfully acknowledge that Haliburton Forest Biochar is in the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe; some of its communities and nations are collectively known as the Williams Treaty First Nations. These First Nations and many others have been stewards of these lands since time immemorial.

We seek to honour their historical and ongoing connection to the land by acknowledging their stewardship, engaging their communities, and learning from their members, while fulfilling our commitment to sustainable forest management.
